about

I was going for more of a Wings vibe with this song. With the instrumentation and the harmonies I had the "Red Rose Speedway" and "Ram" albums in mind as inspiration. Really proud of how this one came out, I think it's one of the best songs on the record.

This was actually the first song that I showed any of my family when I started seriously writing songs midway through high school. My Dad said he thought it was "some obscure Beatles song" when he'd hear me playing it through the walls of our home, which I took as a major compliment. Something I didn't realize until way later after writing the song is that it's in the "second person" which I think is very cool.

The harmonies are really cool on this one too. The notes I sing in the melody don't really match the key the song is in so there are some real juicy suspended chords in the harmonies during the chorus. At least I think that's the reason it sounds off (In a good way). The bridge part at the end its cool too, I think it sounds like the Beach Boys or something out of a DCI show.

If you couldn't tell, I really like this one.

lyrics

On Your Own
Written By: Martin Samuel Wells III

You open your eyes
And begin to realize
The one you love’s already gone and passed you by

When you start to cry
All those tears in your eyes
Won’t wash away
They’re here to stay with you for life

You better run away
And find a way back to him
You know you can’t stay
Don’t let him slip away
Oh, you don’t want to be all on your own

Now, you’re at the door
You don’t know what’s in store
You can’t be mad
You know he loves you and that’s a fact
Or so it seemed
What does it all mean?
He’s got a baby now and he don’t wanna speak

You better run away
You don’t know what to say back to him
You don’t believe it’s true
How could this happen to you?
Oh, you don’t want to be all on your own

And then you try to turn him around
Oh, but he don’t wanna listen to you now
(You left him waiting for so long)
So long, he’s already moved on with his life
You’re going home
You missed your chance
You’re on your own

You’re going home
